Get the Right People on the Bus

By: Janna Pearman Jacobs

People drive everything in your organization; this is why it’s critical to hire the right people — people who can drive innovation and change within your organization.

Getting the right people on the bus for change initiatives isn’t easy, but it’s critical for your organization’s success. Here is an approach I’ve used:

First, start by recognizing and understanding the individual personality traits of your employees. This includes each person’s motivators, behavioral traits, skill sets, and passions, as well as how these align with their individual job and with the team’s goals. This goes beyond a job description — this is about the individual.

Second, map individuals as a team to initiatives that utilize their unique skills, behaviors, and passions. Remember, the goal is to bring individuals together who collaborate and create something greater than the sum of the parts.

Third, evaluate the team’s success, and don’t hesitate to swap out team members as needed. High-performing teams don’t just happen; they are built with intention.

Traits of high-performing teams are universal: trust, discipline, adaptability, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. While identifying and retaining individuals with these traits can be challenging, it’s critical for a company’s success.

If your team is frustrated, turnover is climbing, or you feel like you’re stuck in reactive mode, it’s time to bring in backup. I help organizations cut through chaos, fix what’s broken, and build leadership trust from the inside out.
