ONE THROAT TO CHOKE

By: Janna Pearman Jacobs

Having “one throat to choke” means singular accountability for successful and sustainable outcomes. All organizations need clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability. However, fast-growing organizations require singular accountability; no one else is responsible for the outcome. Because if accountability is unclear, chaos ensues!

To achieve this, I’ve worked with teams (or vendors) to simplify to the point where roles, responsibilities, and accountability for the outcomes the organization prioritizes are crystal clear to everyone. Once defined, they need to be communicated regularly, consistently, and repeatedly. In my experience, teams need more communication than you realize because they are busy working on day-to-day tasks, while you are meeting with other leaders and “always” discussing the priorities.

Your organization is growing; things are changing rapidly. Ensure your teams know what is expected of them so they can deliver for you. Be on the lookout for these behaviors and scenarios:

• Unclear roles and responsibilities within your organization often manifest as conflict, blame, and finger-pointing.
• Lack of accountability looks like a lack of ownership for actions and decisions, being unreliable, and failing to accept responsibility for performance.

If you observe this happening in your organization, a culture change is needed. As a leader, you want your employees and teams to foster a culture with:

• Personal Responsibility
• Transparency
• Reliability
• Meeting Expectations
• Creating Trust
