Train Employees Not to Vomit Problems on You.
By: Janna Pearman Jacobs
Your employees can help you; they can save you time, and this prepares them to become future leaders. This sounds harder than it is, and employees get better with practice. A simple technique I always taught my leaders was a SPIN communication method. Regardless of the situation, problem size, or resolution, this technique can be applied.
Describe the situation by giving context.
Define the problem (include obstacles, issues, and blockers).
Summarize the impact. What’s at risk if the situation and problem are left unresolved.
This could include financials, product quality, employee safety, missed growth targets, missed deadlines, among other factors.
Make a recommendation for what needs to occur for resolution.
This could include resources (time, money, people), decisions, an implementation plan, and other relevant factors.
Implementing something as simple as this and allowing employees to practice can save you time and prepare them for future leadership roles.
